Frog in the Meadow

The door opens, teacher peers in to make sure I am ready, the little first graders file into the room in preparation for making a circle. That does not always happen though, one little boy decides to break the ranks and run for a drum to pound on, the other students mouths are gaping open wondering what will happen, creating a little girl to get brave and stand where she chooses without being in the circle boundaries.

Gracefully and quietly I gently take the little boys arm, stand in front of the run away girl and motion her to follow me as I sing in the highest voice I can muster: Hello children (using the most used syllables in first grade: so and mi). The circle is finally formed and the children are echoing me nicely with anticipation of what is to come.

Singing each child’s name can take a long time and bore the class to death, especially when 1st graders attention span is so short, so we sing four names in a row, then display all kinds of facial features creating giggling and laughter. Four more names follow, then a body movement of some sort, continuing until every child has heard their name sung. You just can not leave out a name for it would hurt some feelings.

Singing games are so much fun. “Frog in the Meadow” is delightful. The children learn the

song then I demonstrate the game. The frog is in the middle of the circle with his/her eyes closed, arm extended and finger pointing. While the class sings the frog turns in circles, then stops on the last word of the song, walks forward in the direction of the pointing finger. The two children in the pointing finger trail stand up and hold hands. The frog then makes a motion to break the two hands apart, the two children separate and run in opposite directions outside of the circle, but around the circle, they meet up on the opposite side, shake hands and say, “Good morning, good afternoon, and good evening.” then continue around the circle. The first student to touch the frog in the meadow becomes the next frog in the meadow.

It is fun to watch these little ones laugh and play while they are singing. What is fun to watch, is when they go outside at recess and play the games I have taught them. They do not realize they are learning to sing while they are playing.

Finally I end the game with different students complaining, “teacher I did not get a turn.” I have learned with experience though, to not play a game allowing every one a turn during one play period. The students get tired of the game and it is not as fun the 2nd time around. I always move on to something else with them wanting more.

The students settle down as we play and hand patting game to some music. The classroom teacher appreciates it if the students are not wound up as they leave the music room. There are a few who do sing or hum a song we have worked on as they walk into the hall. I do not mind though, it always puts a smile on my face.
