Helping

While in the 4th grade I was laid up with rheumatic fever.  It was a result of strep throat numerous times.  During that time doctors were afraid that if a patient was to walk around and get up then the heart would be damaged.  It is not easy for a 9 year old to lay in bed while watching 4 other siblings play. I did not get to go to school, I did not get to play outside, I did not get to get up and go take a bath, it was not fun!!!!

However, I did not have a strict bedtime, since I was in bed all day, I received body massages, to keep my circulation going, and I watched a lot of TV with my father.

My youngest sister was not yet in school at the time.  So when mother would take off for a little while I would convince her to play jump rope and other games with me.  When mom pulled up outside I would scramble to get back in bed threatening my sister to not tell.

In the springtime, mom always did spring cleaning.  I was beginning to get a little better and begged mom to let me help.  She relented and I was able to climb into the cabinets and wipe them out for her.  Spring cleaning for mom meant taking everything out of the cabinets, closets, you name it and washing walls, and everything. I was so happy to be out of bed I would have done anything.  That was the beginning of my cleaning skills.  Because it became a reward for me I learned to enjoy cleaning.  Which leads me up to another job I did while in high school.

There was a family who lived down the road from us. The husbands wife had a stroke and was bed ridden, and his son, who was in his 30′s, had a muscle disease. This family needed someone who could clean their home for them once a week. I was hired. I rode my bike to their home, vacuumed, changed bedding, did laundry, helped the son eat, and whatever else they wanted me to do.  I remember once they had me strip the wax off of the basement floor downstairs.  It was kind of scarey down there and very quiet. I was a little spooked but was able to accomplish the task in a pleasing manner.
