Faced Foreclosure?

| September 11, 2012 | 9 Comments

How many people have faced foreclosure? Job lost? Nowhere to go? More than we would like to think. The economy can be devastating to the ones who are not prepared.

Growing up mom always had a year worth of supplies on hand. We had a basement that

had been dug out and crudely cemented in for our storage of supplies and food. Every fall when the harvest were on we put up three sacks of corn, 5 bushel of peas, 3 bushel of green beans, 4 bushel peaches, 4 bushel pears, and other produce that she could find at a very cheap price. Some we froze and most was canned.

Mom canned a base for soup using tomatoes and pearl barley, chili, and other kinds of soup stock. Green beans were also canned rather than froze. Peaches and pears were bottled and

sometimes made into jam and jelly. Our shelves were stocked just before winter came. We knew if anything happened there would be plenty to eat.

Large metal trash cans were lined with overly large plastic liners and filled with flour and sugar. My father was a wheat farmer for years and we had a lot of grist left at the flour mill, so flour was plentiful for us. Dad also raised five hundred head of cattle, so meat was not an issue either.

Our property sat on a water supply in the ground. The water we used from this reservoir was the best water in the whole valley. It was kept full from the snow melt off in the higher mountains.

Throughout the winter we would use the supply mom stocked up. She was very organized and made an inventory of all food and supplies. When the supplies would run low she would restock. When food became low she made a note and sometimes would buy cans from the store to keep the supply from running out. She always dated everything and made sure things were used before the date expired.

One year my father decided to try a different profession. He really did not want to farm. He was born to sell. He farmed in the summer and sold in the winter months when farming could not be done. The one year money was low. We were so glad there was a food supply on hand. Our bills were not getting paid very well, my parents worried about foreclosure, but we always had some food to eat.

Being prepared for anything that could come our way is a very good idea. Throughout my married life I tried to copy moms food storage. What I stored came in handy many a time, but it is not an easy thing to do when you are living a military life. Every time we made a move I had to start over again. Stocking up is easy though and helps to give us piece of mind that we are prepared for what every may come our way.

Have a great evening.
