Steps to Success

Discover how important it is to master the mundane tasks on a daily basis as it is presented by Jeff Olson in his book: The Slight Edge, Turning Simple Disciplines into Massive Success.”

In his book he talks about 7 slight edge principles, which if done consistently will bring you success in every part of your life.

The steps to success philosophy of the Slight Edge is very simple. Do the same simple things every day, using simple strategies and simple actions.

Steps to success comes from repeating the small mundane things day after day, month after month, and year after year. Every time you repeat a simple action towards a goal you get better and better. It is just as easy to do a simple task as it is just as easy not to do it.

Does it hurt to miss one day?

Say you are on a diet and you want to lose weight. Well, one cookie today will not put on any extra pounds, or take them off, but one cookie every day over time could cause a couple of extra pounds. If you practiced self-control and did not eat that cookie every day, you just might shed a little bit of weight.

A person might talk themselves out of walking every day. Miss one day, oh well, make it up the next. However, doing something a little every day becomes habit forming. If a person misses every day that too, becomes habit forming. What habit do you want to develop or not?

“The Choice”

One of three stories Jeff Olson uses as an example of compounding one day at a time is titled “The Choice.”

A wealthy father gifts his two sons on his death bed a choice of two gifts. The choice was between a million dollars in cash or a penny that would double every day for a month. One son chose the million dollars, the other chose the penny.

If you had never heard this story before, which son do you think made the wisest choice?

The son who chose the million dollars felt pity on his brother who chose only the penny until he saw what compound interest on a daily basis does for one month.

Remember the story of the “Tortoise and the Hare?” Steps to success is not always the speed in which you win the race, but being steady and consistent.

The law of natureis, Do the thing, and you shall have the power: but they who do not the thing have not the power.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson, Compensation (Essays: First Series, 1841) (Taken from Chapter 1 of “The Slight Edge” by Jeff Olson.)

 How-to-actions

To be successful you do need to learn and study the winning how-to-actions, but to really create the success it is your attitude and philosophy that puts everything into place. You can learn all you want, but if you do not apply on a daily basis the simple tasks, you will not succeed.

Seven specific and actionable principles

  1. Always show up and be on time.
  2. Be consistent with everything you do.
  3. Have a good attitude about every thing you get involved with.
  4. Commit for a long period of time. Most good things take time to develop and grow.
  5. Have faith and a burning desire for the goal in mind.
  6. Be willing to pay the price. Be willing to put in extra time and work hard.
  7. Practice integrity. Work hard for yourself and family, don’t wait for others to guide you, work with others, but take initiative.

Integrity is not a conditional word. It doesn’t blow in the wind or change with the weather. —John D. MacDonald

When a person practices integrity, then he/she will continue to do something even when no one is around to watch and observe. A person of integrity is a person worth being around.

The book has many testimonials from people of all walks of life who have lived the practices of “The Slight Edge.” It is a book worth reading and is beneficial to all who choose to follow the steps and guidelines outlined and written about by Jeff Olson.
