We all want to find success in life. Success is such a broad term though. As I grow older and hope that I can retire some day I desire to be a success money earner. How do I do that? I have moved from one adventure to another, and thankfully I still have my teaching job.

Teaching has been a great success story for me. I suppose I do not always look at it as a success story, but many of my students from years back are visiting me now as high school graduates. A young man approached me yesterday morning as he was bringing his little sister to school. He gave me a big hug and said, “Thank you for being the teacher who you are. You inspired in me a desire for music.” He then went on to say he was attending a near by university and studying to be a minister.

As I watched him and his sister walk down the hall, I felt a lump swell up in my throat. That young man paid me one of the highest compliments I could have received. When I first began my teaching experience 18 years ago, I could not wait for my children to grow up so I could choose a different profession. Discipline issues were very challenging to me and being around 600 and plus students every day was draining. However, now I can honestly say I love those little spirits who are around me 5 days a week all school year long. I look at them as little individuals with minds who one day will be little adults taking care of and running our environment and country.

My success in the last 18 years has come in the form of helping shape little ones steer in the right direction of life and being a good example for them. I would feel satisfied if I was blessed to have a spouse helping me out towards retirement. There was a little lady on our street who walked up and down all day long pushing a grocery cart filled with her possessions. I did not want to be in her shoes. I do not know what brought her to that point, but I did not want to be there. Teaching is a wonderful profession, but as a single income it is a struggle. I am learning a new skill in which will allow me to retire with the income I deserve, the income anyone deserves if they are willing to work.

Gratitude is how I feel knowing I was able to accomplish what I have as far as education and gratitude is how I feel knowing I can continue to learn and grow.
